Christian Bale was born in Pembrokeshire, Wales, but later moved to England. He caught the acting bug early in life, and by the age of ten was already appearing in a West End production of The Nerd. Television work soon followed, but it was in 1987's Empire of the Sun (1987) that he first made his mark worldwide. Although Empire did not live up to expectations, critics were impressed by the very young Bale's performance in Steven Spielberg's story of a young British lad who is separated from his parents in Japan-occupied China during World War II.
